Title:
Exploring the Role of Parental Monitoring of Peers on the Relationship Between Family Functioning and Delinquency in the Lives of African American and Hispanic Adolescents.

Abstract:
I will discuss findings from a cross-sectional, social-ecological study of a clinical sample of substance abusing African American and Hispanic adolescents and their families. The study examined the potential mediating effects of an infrequently considered social-ecological construct (parental monitoring of peers) on three adolescent problem behaviors (externalizing behavior, drug use, sexual risk behavior). Research findings and health service implications will be discussed.

Title:
Sex, Drugs, Stress, and Rock'n Roll: Overlooked Health Risk Behaviors in High-Risk Minority Adolescents

Abstract:
My presentation will have 3 parts:
The first part of the presentation will deal with factors that are important to consider when conducting research on adolescent sexual behavior. Specifically, data will be presented that shows how individual differences and alcohol use at the situational level contributes to risky sexual behavior.

In the second part of the presentation, I will discuss the relationship between psychosocial stress and substance use in high-risk minority adolescents and present data which suggests that substance use varies according to stress level and ethnicity in high-risk adolescents.

Lastly, I will give a brief demonstration of a novel HIV Prevention CD game which was developed by a research team at the Institute for HIV Prevention Research at the University of Kentucky.
