RESEARCH and TRAINING
The Research and Training component offers training and resources to new investigators, conducts research, analyses data and supports new research initiatives through the following programs:
The Training Program was developed to create a cadre of researchers who will be skilled in conducting substance abuse and HIV/AIDS research with Latino populations. It offers faculty and graduate students the training and resources necessary to prepare and submit grants in these areas of research. The program is based on mentorship and pairs new investigators with experienced researchers. The center also provides to graduate students the opportunity to learn about the conduct of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS research with Latino populations as they become involved in the different projects of the center.
The Research Program maintains ongoing research on substance abuse and HIV/AIDS issues among Latino populations through research studies and pilot studies:
(1) The Women Study investigates the intergenerational correlation of substance abuse between Latino mothers and daughters.
(2) The Violence Study examines the relationship between drug use and violence among Latinos.
(3) Pilot Studies support the advancement of the research careers of faculty members through seed funding to collect preliminary data. These pilot studies serve as the foundation for the development of large-scale funded research studies leading to independent substance abuse and HIV/AIDS research careers.
The Data Base Analysis Program supports the advancement of the research careers of faculty members and students by providing them with data analysis support in the preparation of scientific papers to be submitted for publication in peer review journals. The Gang Study , which explores the influence of early exposure to drugs, criminal involvement and educational level of Latino gang members, is one of the projects of this program.
The Research Dissemination Program offers the university community research-based knowledge and creates awareness about HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and related issues through conferences, lecture series and brown bag lectures.
