COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The Community Involvement component works to develop strong relationships between researchers and South Florida’s Latino communities. This is accomplished by embracing both the academic and the community expertise to jointly adopt best-practice models on substance abuse and HIV/AIDS for Latinos. In addition, this area promotes research with community-based organizations (CBOs) and disseminates culturally appropriate information about substance abuse and HIV/AIDS.

To achieve its purpose, the Community Involvement works to build community capacity to better meet the needs of Latinos affected by substance abuse and HIV/AIDS through technical assistance and community-based initiatives such as:

Town Hall Meetings, where CBOs and researchers can bring forth, identify and document the needs and status of South Florida’s Latino populations regarding HIV/AIDS and substance abuse.

The Latino Youth HIV/AIDS Social Marketing Campaign: You Gotta Know/Hay Que Saber,” developed to promote knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention and serostatus among Latino youth.
